WASOB Competition Rules

 

1.  REGISTRATION:

All participants must be registered for the current Jamboree. The registration fee, as determined by the Host Band, must be paid in advance for each Noble.  Bands need not be a member of WASOB to be eligible to compete, however, the must be a member in good standing with the ASOB.

 

2.  BAND CATEGORIES & OPTIONS:

   A.  BAND CATEGORIES:

        Small band         4 to 9

        Medium band    10 to 16

        Large band       17 to 22

        Unlimited band  23 or more

   B.  CATEGORY CHANGES:

Categories should not be changed regardless of the number of bands in any category.

   C.  DECLARATIONS:

The Director for each band must declare, at the Director’s Meeting, how many members will perform in the competition, thus establishing the category in which his band is qualified to compete.  A Director may declare his band’s desire to compete in any category above the one for which it qualifies, but a band can only compete in one category. Band category declarations may not be altered after the Director’s Meeting is adjourned.  If a band has more members performing in the competition than allowed for the category declared by their Director, their scores will not be considered and the Director and/or President of the band will be notified of the disqualification prior to the awards banquet.

   D.  ORDER OF PLAY:

Bands will be grouped by category to establish the order to play.  (Small to Unlimited).  Each Director will draw for his band’s position for order to play within their category.  Host band may elect to play first.

 

3.  BAND COMPETITION:

   A.  INSTRUMENTS:

Only recognized oriental type Musettes and percussion instruments will be allowed in competition.  Instruments such as snare drums, string or keyed instruments will not be allowed.

   B.  TIME OF PLAY:

Bands must play for minimum of 10 minutes and for a maximum of 15 minutes.  There will be an automatic deduction of 5 points from the total score of any band not observing these time limits.

   C.  MUSIC NUMBERS:

            1.  A band may play as many warm up numbers as desired, providing the time limits are observed.  The competition tune must be played in its entirety and it must be played last.  Bands must halt their presentation after their warm up numbers and some manner indicate to the Judges that they are about to play the contest tune.  Failure to make such an announcement will result in a 5-point deduction from the total score.

            2.  If the Contest Tune is rearranged by any Oriental Band, six copies of the arrangement must be furnished to the WASOB Secretary/Treasurer prior to the Annual Meeting at the Jamboree.  The issued arrangement (music for Musettes) furnished by WASOB or the band’s arrangement (music for Musettes) must be played as written or the band shall be subject to a 5-point penalty.

            3.  Only Shrine Oriental Bands Members in GOOD STANDING and who have been properly registered at the Jamboree may perform in the Contest.  The encouraged participation of other individual(s) in the performance shall subject that band to a 5-point penalty.

 

4.  PERSONNEL:

Three Judges, a Timekeeper and a Steward will be engaged by the Host Band. Judges should be knowledgeable and impartial in their judgment of the musical performance, costumes, showmanship and overall appearance of the competing bands and individuals.  The WASOB Music Committee shall meet with all Judges, the Timekeeper, and Steward prior to the competition to ensure that all are properly briefed.

   A.  DUTIES:

     1.  JUDGES:

All Bands will be scored by the Judges as follows:

Costumes (make-up, whiskers, jewelry)          10 points max

Overall appearance                                       10 points max

Showmanship (audience appeal)                    10 points max

Musical Presentation (warm up tunes)             30 points max

Musical Presentation (contest tune)                 40 points max

Total Possible Points                                     100 points

     2.  TIMEKEEPER:

The timekeeper will record the elapsed time for each performance by band or ensemble.  Time starts at the first sound or opening action (NOT the introduction by the Master of Ceremonies) and continues to the final sound before filing off stage, unless the performance includes moving off the stage.  The Timekeeper and the Steward together count the number of performers on stage and record this on the Timekeepers record sheet.

     3.  STEWARD:

After each performance the Steward will gather the Judges Performance score sheets and the Timekeeper’s record sheet and deliver them to the WASOB Secretary/Treasurer.

     4.  AWARDS:    

A 1ST Place and 2nd Place Trophy will be awarded for each band category with duplicate band scores receiving duplicate trophies.  The World Champion, best overall band perpetual trophy will be presented to the band with the highest total number of points.  This Trophy is on loan to the winning band and must be delivered to the Host Band prior to the next World Championship Jamboree.  The winning band will also receive a suitable plaque, which they may keep.

 

5.  ENSEMBLE COMPETITION

   A.  DECLARATION OF INTENT:

The intention to compete as an ensemble in Solo, Duet or Trio categories must be declared at the Director’s Meeting.  Ensembles will be scheduled in between the band performances, giving consideration to the order in which their band is scheduled to play.

  B.  PARTICIPATION

Participation is encouraged and Noble may compete in any two categories. However, in the event there is an over abundance of ensemble competitors, individuals may be limited to one category.  This decision will be at the discretion of the President of WASOB or the General Chairman of the Jamboree of the Host Band.

   C.  TIME OF PLAY:

Ensembles must complete their performance within 5 minutes.  There will be an automatic deduction of 5 points from the total score of any ensemble whose performance exceeds 5 minutes.

   D.  JUDGING:

All ensembles will be scored by the Judges as follows:

Showmanship (audience appeal)            10 points max

Musical Presentation                              70 points max

Total Possible Points                              80 points

   E.  AWARDS:

Trophies for 1st and 2nd place, with duplicates in case of tie scores, will be awarded for: Solo Musette, Solo Percussion, Duets and Trios.

 

6.  MUSIC DIRECTOR’S COMPETITION:

   A.  JUDGING:

Each Director’s individual performance will be judged during their bands performance.  The will be scored separately as follows:

Start- Stop                               10 points max

Overall Control                          10 points max

Director’s Showmanship             10 points max

Total Possible Points                  30 points

   B.  APPEARANCE:

Judges must be able to identify the Music Director as opposed the “Genie”, “Sultan” or “Dancer”.  The Judges will be instructed not to grade the Director if they are confused as to whom the Director is.

 

7.  VISIBLE MUSIC:

Music held in a standard marching band lyre mounted on an instrument may be used stage without penalty.  Music stands are not allowed.

 

8.  GENERAL: 

   A.  PRACTICE:

The Host Band will arrange for practice locations to be available for every band for one half hour on the day prior to competition.

   B.  MARCH-IN CEREMONIES:

All bands will participate in the General March In and Opening Ceremony if is a part of the Host Bands Schedule of Events.

   C.  COURTESY:

As a common courtesy, all bands are encouraged to be present for the performance of each of the other bands.

   D.  NEXT YEAR’S CONTEST TUNE:

The Host Band for the next Jamboree shall select three numbers from the WASOB music library to submit to the Executive Committee and the band Directors who will select on of the three as the contest tune for the next Jamboree.
